Maintaining your youthful look with Botox
Age is just a number. You may have heard many people say this, but is this really true? To many people, age is indeed only a number, but the wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of skin aging make them look older. Many times, your skin ages even before it should, due to several reasons like poor nutrition, excessive use of cosmetics, sun damage, medication, and genetics among others. Worrying only increases these signs of aging. Call us when you notice the first signs of aging and let us help you! At Vilate Med Spa, we offer some of the best results with Botox Salt Lake City has available, returning youth to this great city.
What is Botox?
Botox is a chemical prescription derived from botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria and its related species. Of the eight types of botulinum toxins from type ‘A’ through type ‘H’, only type A and type B are used commercially in cosmetics, medicine, and in research. Botulinum toxins release neurotransmitters from the nerve into your muscle and temporarily paralyzes your muscle activity. In 1989, botulinum toxin was approved for medical use by the FDA and was commercially marketed as Botox.
Botox is primarily used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face, but it is used for other purposes as well. In the medical industry, Botox is used to prevent chronic migraine, hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, cervical dystonia or repetitive neck spasm, overactive bladder, and lazy eye.
The Story Behind Botox
The medical application of Botox was not an accident. A lot of efforts went into testing its benefits to the cosmetic and medical industry. A plastic surgeon from Sacramento, California, Dr. Richard Clark studied and documented the cosmetic effect of botulinum-A on wrinkles and fine lines. His study was followed by a Canadian ophthalmologist and dermatologist physician couple, JD and JA Carruthers, who observed diminished frown lines between the eyebrows of patients who received Botox injections around the eyes and upper face. They also published a study on the cosmetic effects of botulinum-A. Similar results were also observed by Columbia University, and in 2002, after a series of clinical trials, Botox was approved for cosmetic use by the FDA.
What Results Can I Expect?
As a minimally invasive alternative to facelifts and other surgical anti-aging procedures, Botox achieves a younger look without the need for surgery or excessive downtime.
This is an in-office treatment designed to smooth deep, persistent facial lines with small injections that relax wrinkle-causing muscles without affecting adjacent healthy tissue.
Though there are several uses for Botox, one of the most prominent is for the reduction of wrinkles and an improved appearance. Botox does not completely paralyze the face or result in an unnatural appearance when the procedure is done by a qualified specialist, such as at Vilate Med Spa. What to expect with your Botox treatment?
At Vilate Med Spa, your Botox treatment starts with a consultation with our certified and experienced esthetician, who will determine if you are an ideal candidate for the procedure. Your esthetician will review your medical history, present medical condition, allergies, and family medical history to determine whether or not you are an ideal candidate.
You are a candidate if:
- You are 18 years of age or above
- You have realistic expectations for the treatment
- You do not have any infection, acne, cyst, or wound among others, in the treatment area
- You have not had any recent surgery or cosmetic procedure in or near the treatment area
- You do not have any breathing problem such as asthma
- You are not pregnant, want to be pregnant or are breastfeeding
- You do not have a bleeding problem or take blood thinners
- You do not have any disease that affects your muscles or nerves
- You are not allergic to botulinum toxin or any ingredients present in Botox cosmetics
- You are not allergic to any other brand of botulinum toxin
What comes next?
A physical examination is then conducted to create a treatment plan. The treatment plan will include the injection site, number of injections, and other details. You will also be briefed about the treatment before the procedure begins.
During the procedure, your esthetician will carefully identify and mark the areas on your face to be treated, as per the treatment plan. The area is cleaned with a mild antiseptic or cleanser. You will be offered a topical anesthetic cream or a cold pack to numb the area to avoid any discomfort. Using a narrow needle, Botox is injected directly into your facial muscle. Ice and pressure are applied in the areas being treated to avoid swelling.
What to expect after the treatment?
After injecting Botox to the are, ice and pressure are applied and you may experience a mild headache for a couple of days post-treatment. Minor swelling, numbness, bruising, and redness in the area are common and will resolve in a week or two. A very few patients have experienced drooping eyelids post-treatment, which usually resolves within two to three weeks.
Your esthetician will give you post-treatment care that you must follow to avoid any unintended damage or side effects. Post-treatment care includes:
Avoid rubbing the area that was treated.
Avoid exercise for 24 hours following the procedure.
Avoid laying down for a few hours post-treatment.
There is minimal downtime associated with Botox, and we will help you take proper care before and after the procedure. You can resume your day to day activities immediately after the procedure.
